Welcome to the second post of my "A Bootstrapped SaaS' Adventures" series! As I promised in my previous post about organic growth and SEO (which you can find here: [link to previous post]), in this post I am going to tell you a bit more about our content creation process here at BrandBird, and how we are leveraging content to drive growth.

As I am a person who loves creating, I personally took upon the challenge to create content for our blog and set out to grow our organic traffic in the long term.

To be honest with you, at first I knew nothing. I just loved writing articles but that by itself cannot win you the SEO game. So, Jim offered his help, and led me on a research to find out how to write meaningful blog posts that could rank on Google and get us traffic.

Of course, the process of creating content may vary from business to business, depending on the resources they can allocate and their expertise. But this article is focused on…

Before I go on, a disclaimer: this is a process that I set up myself that I found helps me as a beginner. It is not perfect, or polished, but it will sure help if you are looking for some basic steps to get started!

Now let's break down the process into four key steps:

 for creating content. You want to find topics that attract and engage your target audience. Here are two things I do, that may help you as well:

What is something your current customers and possible customers have in common? What are their needs, pain points, interests? You can learn a lot about your audience if you pay close attention to the feedback you get from your existing users.

Example: a big chunk of BrandBird’s users are founders that build in public, freelancers, content media managers; i.e. people who work a lot on their personal or product’s presence on social media. So, a lot of our articles focus on that: creating eye catching posts, branding your presence on social, etc.

Once you get down your target audience and have a general idea on what your topics will be, take a look at your competitors or blogs with similar topics. What are they writing about? Is there a topic you might have missed? Is there a topic that has been overanalysed?

Usually, a Google search around the topic will give you some blogs to look into. And with this research you can identify gaps you can fill with your articles, get a fresh perspective and come up with more ideas for topics.

Now that you found some interesting topics, it’s time to craft your content around them. Keyword research is what you want to do to 

, and then optimise it for search engines by using the right keywords. Here’s what I do:

In Google Keyword Planner you can search for keywords or add a website (like a competitor’s article) and find the relevant keywords. It can help you come up with more keywords and phrases for your content.

In Answer the Public, you can find questions and phrases around your keyword that a lot of people search for. So, you can come up with even more ideas for your content.

✨Tip: For your research to be right, you first want to make sure to select the region and language of your audience. Where do most of your customers reside and what language are they speaking?

You can start your research with simple keywords like “Twitter banner” and then find more keywords and phrases you can use for my articles from the tools’ suggestions. Basically, what you are looking for is keywords that have less competition (Low) but a decent search volume (>1K searches).

If you find that there are no keywords matching this description, then maybe it’s best to switch your content to a different direction.

Once you find your keywords, note them down in a list so you can use them later on.

Here’s the fun part: creating the content and blending the keywords in there. Remember, the goal is to create content that not only ranks well but also provides genuine value to your readers.

The first step I take before writing an article, is make a clear outline of its cοntents. I start with a clear outline that includes headings and subheadings to organize my thoughts and make the content scannable. Once you get the article’s main structure down it will be easier to fill it up with content, instead of just looking down on a blank screen.

Your content should give value to your audience, so it’s important to provide them with accurate and valuable information over an article filled with just keywords. For this task you can put your own knowledge into use, but also leverage AI for more ideas and text generation.

Including media like relevant images, infographics, or videos is also super useful to make your content more engaging and scannable.

To optimize your content for SEO you need to incorporate the target keywords naturally into your title, headings, first paragraph, and throughout the content. It’s good practice to do this while writing the content, so the keywords don’t look just thrown in there. What I do is keep the list of the keywords open, so that I can easily pop them into the content while I am writing.

A backlink is when your site’s or articles’ URL is posted on another website, blog, or social media. Think of a backlink as a reference: it can take people to your site, but also improve your site’s authority. For your content to have optimal SEO you need backlinks. Some tips around backlinks are:

Here is another reason why creating good content is SO important. Good content increases your chance of someone finding it valuable and using it as a reference or just linking to it. This means more backlinks for you!

Posting your content on social will not only bring it in front of people who may be interested in it, but will also create backlinks for it. You can simply post them from your personal or business account, but also look out for any questions or relevant posts from other people where you can post them as comments.

This one is a bit harder, but you can also post your articles to online communities like forums, Q&A sites, and groups on social media platforms. The hard part is that your article should be relevant to the discussion so you’d have to check the new posts regularly and only respond to the ones where you can give value.

Remember, quality is key when it comes to backlinks. A few high-quality links from reputable sites in your industry are far more valuable than many low-quality links.

Creating content that drives organic growth is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires consistent work and patience. And your process and style of writing may change as you go, but you should always stick to writing if you want results eventually.

A Bootstrapped SaaS’ Adventures: Building Content for Organic Growth

It’s been a while since I’ve joined BrandBird, and every day on this journey has been different. At the moment our main objective is to grow BrandBird by typing into more marketing channels and introducing some PLG practices like onboarding and surveys.

While reviewing the places users reach us from, we realised we could be missing a lot of traffic coming from search engines. So, we decided to work on our blog a bit; expand the content and improve its performance. And then we could promote BrandBird through our blog posts.

As I am a person who loves creating, and writing is another form of creating I took up on the challenge to write some articles for BrandBird’s blog.

A blog is a great way to attract organic traffic; you simply need to create good content that your target audience wants to read about. But then of course you also need to optimise your content for the search engines and improve its ranking; in short you need to do SEO for your blog.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the process of improving your website in terms of performance, relevance and credibility so it can rank better in search engines like Google. By doing SEO you can bring organic traffic to your website; this means you can put your blog in front of people’s eyes for free.

SEO, if done right, is a complicated process that involves both technical and content aspects. In full honesty, I am not a SEO expert, so I cannot really drill down to all of the details that you will need to tend to, to have a solid SEO. But what I know is that good SEO certainly needs a lot of time and resources.

So, it’s not exactly free; it costs time and lots of it 😅

What if you don’t have the time and resources?

When you are a small startup or bootstrapping like us, you probably won’t have a lot of time and resources to invest on SEO. What you can do is start with a good technical base and then focus on the content. And this is what we do.

Right now we are at the point of expanding our blog’s content, with SEO always mind, so that the content we build can eventually bring us organic traffic. This means we are looking to find the right topics for our articles, we research the keywords that will improve our pages’ rankings, and we try to create high-quality backlinks to improve their credibility. I will expand on the process I follow for this on another post.

Nope. The ugly truth is you might not see any traffic right away. A blog is long-term investment; at first you may not see any traction but later it could prove a steady way to bring organic traffic. It is kind of a give and take situation; the more time you invest in your blog and its content, the more traffic you could get from it.

So, don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results right away. Keep up the work and one day you will get to see the fruits of your work. And by fruits I mean the visits on your blog 🫐

A Bootstrapped SaaS’ Adventures: Our First Steps to Organic Growth

Did you know that it’s most likely for a frustrated or angry customer to respond to a survey?

It’s commonly known that people are generally more motivated to respond to surveys when they have had a negative experience rather than a positive one. Frustrated or angry customers are more likely to take the time to share their dissatisfaction, seeking resolution or simply wanting to vent their frustrations.

On the other hand, satisfied customers often feel no pressing need to provide feedback unless they had an exceptionally positive experience.

The reason behind this is that most people find surveys as as tedious, time-consuming, and often irrelevant. So, if you want to implement surveys for your product or services, it as a necessary step to transform this necessary evil into an engaging, insightful tool that your users actually want to complete.

But how can you turn something so boring into something engaging? 🤔

Let’s split this into two parts: how to structure your survey and then your survey’s questions.

 Users are more likely to drop off a longer survey, and never complete it. So it’s important to keep your surveys simple and concise. Try by limiting your surveys to less than ten questions.

 Your users will be more willing to engage with your survey if they feel it gives them value. Sharing a survey with your users asking them to “take a survey to help you” probably won’t get you a lot of responses. Instead, you can let your users know that this is all about them and their responses will be used to make 

 Adding images, videos, or even GIFs can make a survey more fun and interactive for your users. Media can provide some visual context to the users, induce their feelings and ultimately, increase engagement with the survey.

 Incentives are like a thank you gift to the respondents for taking the time to help you. They can boost every survey’s response rates, but they are a must-have if you plan on asking your users to fill in a longer survey. But don’t worry, you don’t need to break the bank for this. An incentive could be anything your users may find valuable; a coupon code, an extended trial or even an e-book. It’s up to you to find out what it is that will prompt more users to take your survey.

This may sound easy but it can really have an effect on your survey's response rate. If you have a Skip button available for the user to click right away, of course they are going to take the easy way out. Consider hiding or removing the skip option altogether, to get as many responses possible. 

 Not all your users are the same, so they should not have to respond to the same questions either. Use your cohorts to find out which questions each user should respond to, so it’s meaningful for both them and you. You can differentiate the questions based on a user’s industry and goals, but more importantly based on their product usage. Which features are they using? How often? Having to respond to questions relevant to their experience, users will find themselves more engaged with the survey, rather than lost in a list of questions they don’t know how to respond to.

 Using survey logic you can define different question paths for each user, based on their responses. This can make your questions more relevant for the respondents, as their survey experience will imitate a real conversation. For example, if a user responds that would not share your product with their friends, your next question should not be “What do you like about the product?” but “What is it that you dislike on the product?”. It’s all about keeping the questions relevant to the actual user.

 While open-ended questions can help you gather deeper and more thorough feedback from your users, they also may appear daunting to them. Responding to open-ended questions takes much longer, as the user needs to think about their response and also type it in. A good rule of thumb is to only include 1-2 open-ended questions, usually as a follow-up after a close-ended one.

Don’t be a robot; use familiar language:

 This may look like a no-brainer, but people usually fall into the trap of using formalities, jargon and flowery language for their surveys. If respondents cannot understand the questions of your survey, they may drop off or worse, choose a response option by chance. So, it’s necessary to keep your questions simple, and in familiar language, to make sure that your users will not feel confused or unsure while taking the survey.

By applying these strategies, you can create surveys that are not only more engaging but also more likely to be completed. Engaged respondents provide higher quality data, which can lead to better insights and more informed business decisions. In turn, this can help improve your products, services, and overall customer satisfaction.

How to Create Engaging Product Surveys

Well, I didn’t, but I knew it was important so here we are after some research and I would love to tell you!

Surveys are a quick and efficient way to gather valuable information from your customers but unfortunately, they are not exactly loved by users. They are a necessary evil though, so you need to strike a balance with them; too many or too little could prove to be an issue for your business.

If you burden your users with too many surveys, most likely they’ll feel overwhelmed and tune out, leading to low response rates on your surveys. On the other hand, if you don’t have enough surveys, you will surely miss out on crucial feedback and valuable information, leaving you in the dark about your users’ needs.

So, you need to have just enough surveys to stay in tune with your users, but without overloading them.

Well, it depends from business to business and you can always test out and find out what works best for yours. But for me, there are three essential surveys you surely need to have as a SaaS business, and these are:

Each one of these can help you gather valuable information and feedback through different stages of the customer survey. Using these, you can vastly improve your product and user experience.

Α sign-up or welcome survey is a survey you share with your new users right after they signup for your product.

It is a great tool to get to know your users, learn about their needs and goals. You can collect data that will allow you to define your cohorts and personalise user experience.

Moreover, welcome surveys are a great way to make your users feel heard. Users are most likely to stick around when they feel heard and understood, and a welcome survey can show them just that; that you want to learn more about them and support them.

Translating this into business terms, welcome surveys can help you increase retention and reduce churn by improving the user experience and fostering a more loyal customer base.

A user satisfaction survey is a survey you share with your users after they have interacted with your product or service.

The primary purpose of these surveys is to help you understand your customers' experiences and identify areas for improvement. Analysing the feedback, you can gain insights into what works well and what needs to be improved in your product or service. With this information you will be able to make informed decisions, to improve your users’ experience and meet their needs and expectations.

Again, from a business perspective, these surveys often include a question that can help you define your business’ NPS score. As NPS measures the likelihood of customers recommending the product or service to others, you can get an indication as to how much your users are engaged and enjoying your product, and ultimately which is the possibility of them churning or loyally using your product.

A churn survey is a survey you share with your users after they leave your product, stop using your services, cancel their subscription, or contract with your business.

Churn surveys can help you uncover the most common reasons your customers churn. They can help you identify patterns, needs and issues that may lead your customers to be unhappy with your product and ultimately disengage.

With this information at hand, you can work to address these issues and improve your product or services, so that you can reduce churn, increase customer retention in time and build a more loyal customer base.

To conclude, surveys are an essential tool for any SaaS business aiming to improve and thrive in a competitive landscape. 3 Must-Have Surveys For Any SaaS Business

These past few weeks I have been focused on designing an onboarding experience for BrandBird. We are following a PLG strategy for BrandBird, so a well-structured onboarding process is crucial. And as always, I felt it would be important to do some research before I work on it, to ensure I am on the right path. In this article I will sum up some of the information I found important for someone just starting out with a product-led onboarding strategy.

When implementing a PLG strategy, onboarding is one of the most important tools in your toolbelt. Introducing an onboarding process for your product can significantly reduce customer acquisition costs, enhance retention, and overall, promote business growth. A successful onboarding strategy should be personalised, concise, and focused on delivering value to your users. And it should not stop right after a user becomes a customer; onboarding should be a continuous journey for your users. Make sure to set up metrics to measure the success of your onboarding, and adjust to achieve the best results.

It’s widely known that PLG places the product as the primary driver of acquisition, conversion and retention. And this is why effective onboarding plays a pivotal role in this approach. It's your product’s first impression and the first opportunity to showcase the value of the product and convert users into loyal, engaged customers.

To speak in business terms, onboarding can shorten your product’s Time to Value, and consecutively increase retention, reduce your CAC (Customer Aquisition Cost) and overall, promote business growth. Let’s see how:

Retention is crucial for sustainable growth and profitability, as retaining existing customers is often more cost-effective than acquiring new ones.

It has become apparent that users that get value from a product early in the process are more likely to engage with the product long-term and stay as loyal customers.

A smooth onboarding experience can help your users learn the ropes of your product faster, making it easier for them to find value early on, thus driving retention.

Unlike traditional sales and marketing-led strategies, in PLG, the product is the driver acquisition. Having a good user onboarding experience can not only help you turn your users into customers, but also reduce the cost of acquiring them as customers.

An efficient onboarding flow allows your users to use your product without the need of extensive training, thus reducing CAC. Moreover, users that have a positive first impression are more likely to recommend your product to other users, making the acquisition process even easier.

Plus, a stable onboarding process can be effective even as your business grows, without you having to invest more time or resources to it, keeping the CAC low even at higher revenues.

As I mentioned above, a successful onboarding experience can help you acquire long-term customers easier, without investing tons of resources. It can be the foundation of a strong relationship with your customers, leading to greater development and business’s growth long-term. Plus, keeping the acquisition cost low, and a high retention rate also means an increase in revenue. Summarising this in one sentence, a well-structured onboarding experience can be the key to sustainable growth and profitability.

A product onboarding can take many forms. It starts from your marketing strategies where users first learn about your product. This includes your landing page, social media campaigns, articles and posts. Then it can continue as platform onboarding in the form of product tours, checklists, tooltips, videos, welcome messages, etc. Lastly, the onboarding process is completed through an email campaign that includes all information for a user to successfully use your product. You can adjust each one to your product’s needs, to make an onboarding process that will work for your product.

Characteristics of a successful onboarding strategy

We have seen the reasons why an onboarding strategy is important and also the forms an onboarding strategy can take. But which are the characteristics that make an onboarding strategy successful?

A successful onboarding strategy should be personalized. It begins with knowing your users’ needs and pain points. This is usually implemented through a survey at the beginning of the onboarding.

Having more information about your users, you can construct an onboarding experience for each cohort, targeting the features they will use more heavily and they will get more value out of. Users going through a personalized onboarding experience tend to have a higher engagement rate and be more satisfied with their experience right from the start, thus making your onboarding more successful.

Another characteristic of a successful onboarding strategy is that it should be short with clear, concise steps. Usually three to five steps are enough for your users to understand the core features of your product. Any more could lead to users feeling overwhelmed and leaving the flow.

The steps should be small, manageable and in a logical sequence, gradually introducing users to the features of your product. This way users can learn at their own pace, in contrast to having to consume a barrage of information in one go.

Users are more likely to stick to a short and manageable onboarding, making this an important characteristic for your onboarding strategy.

Even though your onboarding should be short, you should not forget that within this short sequence you should help your user’s reach the value in your product, or as we say an Aha moment. A successful onboarding strategy is one that focuses on getting users to see the value in the product quickly. Meaning that your onboarding should demonstrate, to each cohort, how your product will help them solve their issues.

By driving your users towards their Aha moment, you can get them through adoption early on, making it more likely for them to convert and engage with your product long-term.

Getting your users through the onboarding flow is important; but not if they are forced through it. Forcing users to go through an onboarding flow usually has the opposite results; them quitting the flow and possibly leaving the product altogether.

This is why it’s important to not only allow the users to skip the onboarding completely, but also give them the option to just minimize it and get back to it later if they want to. This gives the users the freedom to explore on their own, and view the onboarding if (and when) they feel they need more context.

Giving users an option makes them feel in control, thus making it more likely for them to engage with the flow and appreciate the experience.

You may think that an onboarding strategy only includes showing your users how your product works. But it’s not just that. The onboarding starts from the time a user first sees your product, and it only stops when they stop using it. And them signing up is a crucial step of their onboarding.

Your sign up process should be easy and straightforward. Having a lengthy sign-up process where the users need to fill in tons of information before using your product, may lead them to leave and never come back. Consider having a quick sign-up process, like a Google sign-up, and only requiring the very least information for your users to start using the product.

Another way you could go is allowing the users to try your product without having to sign up for their first use, and only requiring them to sign up if they need to move forward or use the product more. Both options are good for keeping users engaged and through your onboarding flow.

As mentioned above, a user’s onboarding journey only stops when they stop using your product. So you should not forget about a user’s onboarding right after conversion. On the contrary, you should focus on giving the users information relevant to them at every point of their journey.

For example, a newly converted customer needs to know more about the additional value of your product, and any additional features coming with their plan. And of course, all our users should be aware of any new features you introduce to your product and may bring them more value.

This continuous onboarding journey is key to retention, and having happy and engaged customers.

As every successful business strategy, an onboarding should not be a one time implementation. To make sure your onboarding flow is working you need to set up metrics, measure it’s performance and adapt to make sure you are getting the best results.

Specifically for optimising your onboarding strategy, you can try measuring the following metrics:

 Percentage of users who completed their onboarding.

 Percentage of users who completed the onboarding and continue using your product.

 The average time it took new users to reach value in your product

When implementing a PLG strategy, you should make sure to introduce an onboarding process for your product. A well-structured onboarding strategy can have lots of benefits for your business, the most important one being sustainable growth and profitability.

A successful onboarding strategy should be personalised, concise, and focused on delivering value to your users. And it should be a continuous journey for your users. Metrics should be set to measure the success of your onboarding, to make sure it’s efficient and successful.

And don’t forget, onboarding can take a lot of forms; you can use these tips to help you get started, but make sure to adjust your onboarding to what works for your product and your business!

Getting Started with Product-Led Onboarding

Are you always in between meetings, feeling stressed, unfocused, and struggling to find time to actually do some work? Then this one is for you.

Picture this: It’s one of those days with multiple meetings scheduled. You are constantly trying to focus on a task and gain momentum, but you can’t. Interruptions from meetings break your focus and disrupt your workflow.

As you shift between tasks and meetings, you are constantly switching context, trying to adjust to new information and competing priorities. And each time you switch context, your brain requires additional time and effort to adjust and fully concentrate.

You end up feeling overwhelmed by the constant demands for attention and responsiveness, feeling unproductive and unfulfilled. Another day goes by, and you are still behind on your tasks.

It’s true; meetings can be a real productivity killer if they go unchecked. Not only do they hinder your productivity and job fulfillment, but they also increase your levels of stress and frustration.

But how can you change this? I have 5 quick tips for you:

Require an agenda: Requiring an agenda can not only help you filter out unnecessary meetings but also cut time off the necessary ones. You can set up a number of questions the organizer has to respond to before you join a meeting, starting with: What problem is this meeting looking to resolve?

Block time: Blocked time on your calendar can be the time for you to deeply focus and gain momentum on your tasks. But this tip will not work if you are not willing to commit to it. You need to treat this time as sacred and avoid scheduling meetings during it. Remember: it’s your time; if you don’t respect it, no one will.

 Try to schedule buffer periods between meetings, to give yourself time to decompress, and gather your thoughts. You can also use these buffer times to work on the actionable items from the previous meeting or some quick no-brainer tasks so you won’t have to work on them later in your day. This may give you more time later on to work on a bigger task.

 Don’t be afraid to utilize productivity tools to collaborate with your team asynchronously and manage your tasks efficiently. Asynchronous communication can prove to be very effective if you fit it to your team’s needs and processes.

 Don’t hesitate to politely decline meetings that don't align with your priorities or where your presence isn't essential. This also goes for meetings that overload your already busy schedule. Most meetings can wait for a day or two, so you can always negotiate alternative meeting times to keep your schedule nice and clean.

Even if you don’t follow any of these tips by heart, it’s essential to recognize the importance of striking a balance between meetings and focus time to be productive in your role.

With this in mind and these tips as a starting point, you can adapt and refine your approach based on your specific responsibilities and work environment. The end goal, of course, is to create a schedule that works for you, and not a schedule that you need to work hard to keep up with.

Managing your meetings to increase your productivity

Both OKRs and KPIs are powerful tools that can be used to measure business performance, set goals and drive growth. But how do they differ? And how can an organization leverage them?

✅ OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) are a goal-setting framework used to break company-wide objectives into smaller key results that can be tackled by teams or individuals.

Think of the objectives as the desired outcomes, aligning teams with the organization’s direction, and key results as the specific milestones that indicate progress toward these objectives. Key results can be activity-based or value-based.

✅ KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are quantifiable metrics used to evaluate the performance of an organization, team, or individual toward specific goals.

They can be leading or lagging indicators, measuring the overall progress and efficiency of an organization, and can be used to keep teams and individuals accountable toward the broader goals of the organization.

KPIs can bleed into OKRs, as they can help measure the impact an OKR has towards an organization’s business performance.

Value-based Key Result: Increase in-app purchases by 10%
Value-based Key Result: Increase product adoption for returning users to 80%
Action-based Key Result: Deliver in-app onboarding by March
KPI: Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) has increased by 5%.

To conclude, OKRs set the direction and define the path to get there, while KPIs serve as navigation tools, indicating whether the journey is on track. Together, they can give you a holistic approach to managing the performance of the whole organization, flowing down to the individual level, and can help you drive growth by keeping everyone accountable and on track.


Both OKRs and KPIs are powerful tools that can be used to measure business performance, set goals and drive growth. But how do they differ? And how can an organization leverage them?

Differences between OKRs and KPIs
